Johnny Barr – Break The Fall (2025)

Known for his intricate guitar skills, energetic performances, confident stage presence, and way of ensnaring your senses without you realising what just happened in an “oh my gee golliness” moment, Johnny Barr is nothing but pedestrian. While we will gander at his solo project today, Barr is by no means a newbie in the industry having gained critical acclaim with the six-piece folk group, Winter Springs. Along with the features in publications, radio stations, playlists, and sharing a stage with artists like Hozier and James Bay, the UK-based singer-songwriter is a significant figure in the folk/rock music scene. Come with us as we jump head-first into his most recent solo song, ‘Break The Fall’.

The title-track off his upcoming four-track EP, ‘Break The Fall’ is a kaleidoscopic rush of genre-diverse sound. Produced with Mark McMillan, a blend of soul-stirring folk with indie-rock, a fleck of soul quickly lulling you into a mellifluous flood of laidback music; then it hits you in the chest with an almighty thwack. A brash burst of alternative rock picks you from the smooth sonic river, setting you along a tumultuous journey to the shore.

Pounding drums pulsate with a bold bass, and scorching guitars bound by Barr’s gritty vocals. An intriguing Scottish inflexion from Barr’s tone seemingly enhances the tracks weightiness as a rock song, but also brings tinges of traditional Celtic music highlighting Barr’s Scottish roots. The interesting bit – as if not already interesting already – is the inclusion of Calum Ingram on an electric cello. This feature seems to add a little something-something dragging an orchestral blink into the rock-drenched symphony.

In addition to the single, Johnny Barr released a live music video featuring Calum Ingram. You can view the video for ‘Break The Fall’ below and/or on Barr’s YouTube channel.
