Joe Pope – The Window (2022)
Described as an artist who “…always manages to reach deep inside me” (Edgar Allen Poets) and “…has invented his own sound with his subtle songwriting” (Sinusoidal Music), singer-songwriter Joe Pope is innovative, sophisticated and inimitable. Alongside these praises, Pope has received coverage from York Calling, Send Me Your Ears, It’s All Indie, and various playlists. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘The Window’.
Following his well-received song ‘When The Wind Blows’, Pope collaborates once again with vocalist Lucia and cellist Yoed Nir on ‘The Window’. Soft and soothing, ‘The Window’ has a typical, old-school folk sound filled with nostalgic Dylan intimacy. Influenced by Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Phoebe Bridgers and Gerry Rafferty, Pope’s music is entirely folk; however, despite the retro sentiments, his music retains a contemporary folk-pop sound giving it a bit of an obscure edge.
Gentle, smooth and flowing, ‘The Window’ is an elegant fusion of guitars, percussion, keys and Nir’s enchanting cello. Add the dulcet voices of Pope and Lucia, and you have a melodic arrangement to send your soul soaring off on a fluffy sonic cloud. The kaleidoscopic soundscape is filled with a wistful ambience giving the tune a light-hearted quality; however, a melancholic sensibility appears to be woven into the intriguing melody. Recorded at Joe Pope’s home studio inserting elements from his collaborators, ‘The Window’ is sophisticated but with an innocent tinge in the harmonic layers.
Just as the melody is whimsical and fresh, the theme is rather intimate and exposes a person’s vulnerability. Referring to the bedroom window, Pope explains that it is “…a place that sees the love inside your home and the passing of the seasons. It’s a deeply personal portal that most never really think about, but to me is a symbol of the endurance of love, safety, family and passion.”
