Jim McHugh – Her Love (2021)
Bringing an edgy attitude to the typical folk genre, Irish singer-songwriter Jim McHugh is the sound of a new generation. Merging elements of indie-rock with folk, McHugh’s music can be described as eclectic, innovative and unique. In 2016, McHugh released his well-received album Noise Machine drawing together his life experiences in a musical expression. Since then, McHugh has featured in RGM, Totally Dublin, Indie Music Center, Indie Buddie, Jammerzine, The Verge, Hot Press and various playlists. The latest addition to his repertoire is the single ‘Her Love’.
Taken off McHugh’s album Pretending To Wake Up, ‘Her Love’ is a poignant tune touching on issues of the heart. Written as a nostalgic reminiscing of a loved one who has passed away, the track has a melancholic quality in its sincere sound. Recorded with McHugh on vocals and guitar, Paul McCabe on bass, James McNeill on drums and Alex Borwick on synths, ‘Her Love’ effortlessly forms an intimate kaleidoscopic soundscape.
As I mentioned, ‘Her Love’ is a song taken from McHugh’s latest album where he showcases his versatility as an artist. Moving from the punk-influenced ‘Dave’ to this more sentimental ballad, Pretending To Wake Up is a sonic representation of his multi-faceted musical approach. I’m not here to speak about the album, but sometimes a song can be better understood if it is part of a larger construct. Either way, the soul-stirring ‘Her Love’ can send chills down your spine while still soothing your heart. I can’t wait for more from Jim McHugh.
