Jewelia – No Lover (2022)

Described by notable blog CLOUT as being “brilliant art-pop with a distinctive sound”, Jewelia brings a unique, refreshing sound to a slightly stagnating UK pop scene. Based in London, England, singer-songwriter Jewelia has built a loyal following with her bedroom pop style with over 1.2 million views on her YouTube channel. Now, after approximately six months hiatus, the talented songstress is back in full force. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘No Lover’.

Already having made her way onto The Other Side Reviews a couple of times, we are acquainted with her pop sound; however, ‘No Lover’ sees an evolution in her music. A less commercial-sounding track, ‘No Lover’ adopts an upbeat, jovial melody that has you clicking your fingers in time to the song. Unlike her softer ballads ‘I Like Chopin’ and ‘Fields of Gold’ (both released in 2021), the new single is synth-led but the bounciness adds some nostalgic disco vibes to the melody. As part of her upcoming EP Strong In My Own Way, ‘No Lover’ might be placed in the pop section of a music store but there is a unique disco style woven into the sonic tapestry.

Self-produced with Niko Battistini doing the mixing, ‘No Lover’ is perfectly textured and wraps you in a pink bubble of joyful sound. Yet, while there is a brightness to the song, the narrative is more serious. Touching on the trials of being in a relationship, ‘No Lover’ revolves around “the conflicting emotions of trying to reject a relationship due to having too much going on despite feeling attraction.” The interesting aspect of this innovative concept is how ‘No Lover’ is melancholic but filled with a powerful sense of empowerment as Jewelia sings “No, I don’t need no lover”.
