Jesus Or A Gun – Crazy (2022)

Hailing from the sunnier and far warmer side of Europe, Portugal-based foursome Jesus Or A Gun are as hot as the wildfires Portugal, unfortunately, has to handle. No unfortunately about Jesus Or A Gun though. If you are looking for classic rock with a contemporary edge, then this group is just what the doctor ordered.

Formed in 2016, Jesus Or A Gun have built a loyal following across the globe with their unique sound. From their debut EP The Eruption (released in 2016) to the well-received singles ‘Fly High’ and ‘Bite’, the lads have received coverage from blogs, podcasts and playlists alike. Glam Magazine described their sound as “…approaching classic rock in a modern and sentimental way, they do not intend to take us back to the Golden Age of this sound, but rather emphasise the now…” We have to agree.

Following their track ‘Bite’, Jesus Or A Gun’s ‘Crazy’ is an almost chaotic, frenzied sonic gem. While there is a soothing opening with powerful guitars underlying the rich vocals, the lads soon show their bold rock style. Infectious choruses are linked to intriguing verses by breath-taking guitar riffs. The guitar solo is, for me, one of the more jaw-dropping elements in the arrangement; it showcases true skill, and the guitarist makes his instrument sing. What I love is how this raging rock arrangement is well-wrapped in a smooth, rich and warm vocal execution. It’s mad, but you love each chord as they silkily slip beneath your skin.

Vintage, but with modern-day edginess, ‘Crazy’ is just that – crazy. Yet, while the melody sets your soul alight, the lyricism highlights Jesus Or A Gun’s depth as artists. The band explain that ‘Crazy’ was “…written as a cathartic rant about climate science deniers back in 2018…without even dreaming about all that would follow from 2020 onward and how relevant and divisive the topic of scientific fact denialism would become. It has become a recurring exercise to hold back and bit your tongue while this twisted outlook still runs rampant.”

In addition to the single, the band has released an official lyric video for ‘Crazy’. You can view it here or via their YouTube channel. Please note the video uses lighting effects and rapid image transition that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy.
