Jessica Brett – Rom-Com (2025)
Compared to the likes of Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo, Jessica Brett uses infectious sounds and intimate narratives to capture hearts with her moving music. Quickly establishing herself as an artist not to be ignored, the Irish singer-songwriter is not merely turning heads nationally, but finds her music enjoyed by international audiences. Well-received singles like ‘I’ll Come Back Later’, ‘Your Karma’, and ‘It’s Always Been You’ have gathered support from notable publications, radio stations, and Spotify playlists. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘Rom-Com’.
A massive fan of rom-coms, old and new, I would spend hours watching Hugh Grant win someone’s heart in his bashful, bumbling way. I adored Drew Barrymore in Never Been Kissed and The Wedding Singer. When the two came together in Music and Lyrics, I was entranced… but, I digress. I’m here to speak about Jessica Brett’s single ‘Rom-Com’ which draws inspiration from those old-school fairy tales to win your heart with charm, then flips it looking at the depth behind the light-hearted chivalry and romance. She explains:
“When writing ‘Rom-Com’, I wanted to turn the classic fairytale romance on its head using playful yet sarcastic lyrics to challenge the typical love story… the song captures the feeling of self-worth and the refusal to settle for anything less. It’s an anthem for anyone who sees through smooth talkers, knows their value, and won’t be swayed by charming words or empty gestures.”
Lyrically, Brett delves into the complexities of relationships and delicately peels back human fragility and raw emotion; and the melody is as moving. Produced and recorded with Liam Geddes, ‘Rom-Com’ draws together vintage pop, but with hints of RnB lingering in the track. A vibrant concoction of bold beats and silky synths, ‘Rom-Com’ is one of those songs that you hear once, need to press repeat, and then don’t forget for days on end.
