Track of the Day: Jesse Grossi – Last Call

Finding the balance between Sublime, Nirvana, Lilly Allen and Rancid, Jesse Grossi entertains listeners with a genre-defying sound. Featured a couple of tines on The Other Side Reviews, Grossi is no stranger to our ears and we are not the only ones impressed by him. Gaining coverage from FV Music Blog, Talk About Pop Music and several online radios/podcasts, the US-based solo artist has an international following. One of the latest additions to his glowing discography is the single ‘Last Call’.

Following the punk-inspired single ‘Princess’ and preceding the reggae-inspired track ‘Bad Guy’, ‘Last Call’ is another example of Grossi’s versatile style. Reminiscent of Sublime and 311, ‘Last Call’ is a nod to the iconic reggae-rap meets pop-rock sound from the 1990s. Teetering on the cusp of reggae-rap and alt-rock, Grossi merges high-spirited jangle-pop guitars with the heavier Rancid-esque guitar interspersed throughout the track. I know I mention a lot of genres in this description but this merely an indication of Grossi’s innovativeness with musical arrangements.

Yes, the melody plays a large role in melding joviality with an underlying grittiness; however, the execution of chilled lyrics adds to the fun-loving ambience. Recorded in Grossi’s home studio, ‘Last Call’ is a “feel-good song” talking about, well, the fun-filled experiences of a night out. Eloquently setting the scene with his poetic lyricism, the track is a sonic representation of joy, bounce and next day hangover…although it was worth it.

Bringing the sounds of yesteryear to the 21st century, Grossi captivates one with his laidback design and rich vocals. The song can be construed as simplistic, but there is a warmth and tenderness to be found in a kaleidoscopic soundscape.

In addition to his single, Grossi released an official lyric video for ‘Last Call’. Using a series of cartoon images, Grossi adds a visual element to the track taking you along the journey of “going with the flow”. While there is a basic childishness about the video, there is a profoundness in the amusing film and you are part of the tale. Note: while the video is void of strobe effects for the majority of the video, there are some flashing images interspersed throughout making it unsuitable for people with photosensitive epilepsy.
