Jeremy Rice – Why Do You Lie (2022)
Receiving coverage from notable press like Skope Magazine, Neufutur, Music Existence, The Hollywood Digest, Vents Magazine, Indie Band Guru and Music Injection, it is clear that Canada-based artist Jeremy Rice is turning heads on an international scale. Skirting the line between indie-rock and alternative pop, Rice has an upbeat sound that can make anyone grin. His 2019 album Jeremy Rice and the Legendary Fist of Takinawa made its rounds across the globe, but we’re taking a gander at his latest release ‘Why Do You Lie’.
The first release since ‘On va s’défoncer!’ (released in 2020), ‘Why Do You Lie’ finds the delicate balance between old-school pop, indie-rock and contemporary soul. It is impossible to describe this singer-songwriter using typical adjectives – bouncy, jovial and eclectic just don’t cut it. Perhaps the best words are obscure, experimental and enigmatic. In ‘Why Do You Lie’ Rice adopts a high-paced, upbeat sound interlaced with soul sentiments adding a contemporary edginess to the track. The impressive guitar solo needs to be noted as it bridges catchy choruses with powerful verses.
As with his previous release, ‘Why Do You Lie’ is bold and powerful proving Rice to be a forceful artist; however, ‘Why Do You Lie’ invites a sense of intimacy in the kaleidoscopic soundscape. Not only is there a distinctive uniqueness in the melodic arrangement, but the incorporation of French at the opening of the single also adds a little something special to the song.
One of my favourite aspects of ‘Why Do You Lie’ is the intimacy enfolded in the bright pop arrangement. Rice’s vocals retain a high-paced happiness, but a sadness exists beyond the dulcet tones in the heartfelt lyricism helping him connect with audiences on a deeper level. If I had to, I would compare Jeremy Rice and ‘Why Do You Lie’ to The Monkees and their track ‘Daydream Believer’. Happy, fun and meaningful with a true connection to another being.
