Jenny Thiele – Loonie (2024)

Marching to the beat of her own drum, Jenny Thiele immerses herself in performing arts from dance theatre choreography and performance to producing experimental electronica as AnnaOtta and creating original music as a singer-songwriter.  While her solo project is the one we are looking at, or rather listening to, Thiele has band experience touring as a keyboardist and vocalist with the German group Fortuna Ehrenfeld. After leaving Fortuna Ehrenfeld in 2022, Thiele began releasing solo music starting with the well-received album Killing Time. Since then, her music has received international acclaim featuring on various publications and radio shows.

Following the 2023 Haldern Studio Sessions EP, Thiele enters 2024 with a forceful blast of music in her maxi-single release of the single ‘Loonie’. Originally part of her debut album Killing Time, ‘Loonie’ is an honest, raw representation of Thiele as a musician; and this month she includes it alongside a remix version created with Robin Flux. Yet, while the remix version deserves attention, we’re taking a gander at the original single.

Often referred to as a theatrical artist, ‘Loonie’ presents a cinematic soundscape primed for an exciting musical journey. Building an ethereal haze of music, the guitar-driven melody leads you into a sonic forest with Thiele waiting to navigate the foggy scene. Soft and soothing, your heart calms when listening to the gentle guitar; however, an 808 beat underlies the melody with piercing hits and singed slides. This slight distortion adds a 90s pop edginess to what could lie alongside Chris Isaak on a playlist.

The melody is intriguing and lifts your heart with mellifluous movements, but it is Thiele’s vocals that seduce you. Grabbing your hand, she leads you through the soundscape with ease. Thiele effortlessly cradles your heart with a gentle calm but simultaneously grasps with defiant drowning depth. So, cool and calm but oozing vulnerability and icy chills – all in a moving melody you would be crazy to ignore.

In addition to the single, Jenny Thiele released an official music video for ‘Loonie’. You can view the video below or on her YouTube channel.
