Jenny Räisänen – A Bird (2023)

Hailing from Finland but now residing in Ireland, singer-songwriter Jenny Räisänen finds the line between whimsy and seriousness in her music. This unique sound was born while listening to the sounds of Finnish forests and has been strengthened through Räisänen’s experiences. Seeing the significance of the connection between the self and music, her unique melodies can capture hearts with ease. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘A Bird’.

While Räisänen only began releasing music this year, she is turning heads across the globe with features on notable publications and playlists. Following her debut track ‘In A Whisper’, she continues to enchant listeners with the tender single ‘A Bird’. Retaining a whimsical nature, the sophomore single incorporates Räisänen’s distinctive folk tones but with a classical eeriness. Simplistic in its arrangement, the delicate vocals sit atop an acoustic piano sound; however, ‘A Bird’ is more haunting with the inclusion of Anna Janka-Murros’s violin. Interestingly, despite the minimalist feeling of the melody, the overall instrumentation encompasses a kaleidoscopic whirl of sound.

Sending shivers down my arms, the creepiness of ‘A Bird’ pierces your heart and seeps into your soul. What I find intriguing is how the complexity of the song’s theme and sound falls within a simple acoustic package.

“The song is about the power struggle between dreams and fears. The bird continues to fly but a call echoes on the horizon. The idea for the song came from a picture where big waves were beating a lighthouse. My piano riff and soundscape illustrate sounds from the sea. Anna Janka Murros’s violin is like a bird circling near the shore trying to find a place to land.” – Jenny Räisänen on ‘A Bird’

Sincere but chilling, Jenny Räisänen can make an impression on anyone with her almost indistinguishable sound. The question is, will it be a good or bad one? For me, I highly recommend Räisänen because of the indistinguishable, chilling nature of her music.
