Jenny Maybee – Holy Holy (2025)
Setting alongside artists like Billie Holiday, Amy Winehouse, and Adele, with piano styles compared to the likes of McCoy Tyner and Cecil Taylor, Jenny Maybee draws together old and new in an exquisite brand of contemporary music. Classically trained but with experimental avant-garde tendencies, the US-based songstress celebrates all facets of music and composition encroaching on the modern-day with tendrils of yesteryear. For me, this is my introduction to Jenny Maybee, but she has turned heads internationally for some time; then again, it’s better late to the party than never. So, here we go…
Following her well-received singles ‘Run’, ‘On My Way’ and 2024’s ‘No Resistance’, ‘Holy Holy’ is Maybee’s fourth single from the upcoming album, Only Love (due for release in July 2025). Joined by co-producer Isha “The Mad Scientist” Erskine, it is an ethereal wade into a cinematic soundscape; however, just as there is an otherworldliness floating in its sonic haze, a strong anchor exists in the jazz-meets-soul sound.
For me, ‘Holy Holy’ is the theme song for some fantastic heartfelt drama yet to be filmed – one of those with a protagonist who goes through bad stuff to come out stronger at the end. Considering the inspiration of composers like Hans Zimmer and Thomas Newman, it makes sense that ‘Holy Holy’ would be film-worthy. Hard-hitting orchestral arrangements with raw, heart-breaking vocals delicately weave complexity and simplicity in a masterful symphony.
“This is a song that was written as life burned to the ground and required leaving behind the old person, the old life, but moving forward into the new with a renewed sense of purpose, hope, and power. As life burns to the ground, sometimes you have to bury the old version of yourself to step fully into the new one.” – Jenny Maybee on ‘Holy Holy’
As I mentioned, this is my introduction to Jenny Maybee and I have only one complaint… actually, two complaints. First, that I had not discovered Maybee sooner. The second, her songs are just too short, even at four minutes you keep wanting more from the charming songstress.
In addition to the single, Jenny Maybee released a concept art music video for ‘Holy Holy’. You can view the video below and/or on her YouTube channel.
