Jennifer Juliette – Columns (2021)

It’s a common belief that all Welsh people can sing. Considering Wales is known as the land of music and song, it has to be true that all Welsh people can sing. In the case of Jennifer Juliette, this is spot-on. Born in Wales but now based in Berlin, Juliette embraced music at a young age when she began playing the piano and singing at church at age four; from there she completed classical musical training, performed in several orchestral settings, performed at various prestigious venues and is now releasing original material. One of the latest additions to her well-received discography is ‘Columns’.

One of the tracks off her debut EP Anchors, ‘Columns’ is an emotional and intimate contemporary pop song. Actually, to be honest, ‘Columns’ borders on the cusp of pop and alternative rock – think of ‘My Immortal’ by Evanescence and you’ll find some similarity. Combining her classical training with a contemporary pop style, one might imagine something like Alicia Keys; however, Juliette has dark innovativeness making her stand out from the rest. The acoustic-driven ‘Columns’ immediately engulfs you in a whirlpool of sound easily losing control of your senses and hanging onto the one strand of music.

While the track has a sense of intricate melancholy, the melody is rather soothing in its despair. Penned as a “breakup anthem for anyone who is isolated and lost despite being with a loved one”, ‘Columns’ prompts feelings of vulnerability, anxiety, frustration and desperate fear. The personal narrative ensures a connection between Juliette and her listener with a deeper understanding of an internal conflict.

It’s true that ‘Columns’ is a mere combination of vocals and a piano, but the tumultuous journey displayed makes the song kaleidoscopic. It shows that there is a cinematic beauty in simplicity and how basic songs can be the most emotional. Anthemic and heartwarming, ‘Columns’ is one of my favourite singles to date and Jennifer Juliette is definitely one to watch.
