Jenna Roessler – simulation (2023)

Embracing her passion for music at a young age, singer-songwriter Jenna Roessler was writing and performing songs before the age of 10. Think about it, even before she hit “double digits”, her melodious vocals met heartfelt lyrics with a childish innocence. Skip ahead just over a decade and the US-based Roessler entices us with intricate, profound tracks – all at the age of 19. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘simulation’.

Without attempting to sound like an “old fogie”, back in the day when I was 19, I hardly understood anything about myself, the world or life. Roessler exists as a representative of the new generation who grow up too quickly in my opinion, and her singles capture poignant innocence with thoughtful insight. Following her debut single ‘forget i exist’, ‘simulation’ is an exploration of the hurt, pain and anger associated with difficult experiences. Roessler explains:

“My inspirations come from the pain or frustrations of past experiences or relationships…also, for fun and meaning, each song has a colourful meaning to me…’simulation’ is red. I have seen red when I was angry and frustrated from that experience…”

Similar to ‘forget i exist’, ‘simulation’ leans toward a contemporary pop sound with its toe-tapping vibe; however, the sophomore song leans toward indie-pop with some glimpses of soul woven into the melody. Interestingly, there is a fusion of pounding drums and scorching guitars tinged with a wink of piano, a soothing lightness exists in the angsty rage.

For me, it is not the melody or the lyricism that captures my heart; it is Roessler’s vocals. Rich and bold with a dash of vulnerability, she navigates the complexity of frustration, anger and heartbreak in a soulful way. Slipping the intimate rawness of Amy Winehouse into the powerful blast of Christina Aguilera, ‘simulation’ is a complex blend of melancholy, ferocity and jovial freshness woven into a labyrinth of sound.

In addition to the single, Jenna Roessler released an official music video for ‘simulation’. You can view the video below or on her YouTube channel.
