Jeffrey Chan – Over (2022)

Through ‘Try’ and ‘Vertigo’, Jeffrey Chan pushed musical boundaries and merged sounds to take us on dizzying journeys into the highs of emotion. As he continues to explore some retro tones, he turns his emotive skills to the moment when you come to terms with the end of a relationship in ‘Over’. Through the music, he captures that instance where you look back on the relationship and consider all the good and bad.

Taking the sounds of 80s synth pop and new wave, he wraps them around his unique style to offer a new twist on the topic of breakups. The shimmer of the single leaves a trail of catharsis that helps you overcome the sadness and pain of breaking up, while letting us hold onto everything good that happened. Another stunning showcase of his musicality, this single lets us know that Chan is moving from strength to strength.

The pulse of the synths in the opening of ‘Over’ brings a touch of retro vibes to the track. There is a touch of old-school dance vibes woven into the pumping beat of the melody that has you bouncing to the sound. It is a really fantastic combination of retro synth-pop and a flair of modern sensibilities. While the music is undeniably catchy, there is an interesting emotive flow that is a little at odds with the overall upbeat vibes of the music. The pulse of the synths fills your muscles with the need to dance, but the mid-levels of the music have a touch of darkness. Everything in the melody comes together for a rather addictive movement that continues to highlight the power of Chan’s musicality.

As you are dancing to the melody, his vocals bring the real emotional hit. While there is a building of complicated emotions in the melody, it is the vocal performance that gives this aspect of the single life. His performance has a rather understated start as he brings the start of a relationship to life with the initial spark that turned from a high to a low. The power of his voice is used to perfection as you head into the chorus with a surge of emotive flows. He tugs at your heartstrings as he remembers the highs of the relationship, only to come to terms with the end of everything. The complex emotions have been woven into a really catchy arrangement that does both the highs and lows of these moments justice.
