Jeffrey Chan – My Oh My (2024)

Easily resonating with listeners young and old, singer-songwriter Jeffrey Chan wraps intimate storytelling with intriguing music. Traipsing across various flavours of modern-day pop, the Australian musician clasps well-known pop tones and then slathers it with a unique electronic flair. We first came across Jeffrey Chan in 2020 with his single ‘Try’, but he was already enchanting international audiences for a few years before this. He continued to tantalise our ears with the 2022 singles ‘Vertigo’ and ‘Over’, and now we take another gander at Chan in his latest single ‘My Oh My’.

While retaining the essence of contemporary pop in his music, Chan shifts slightly with ‘My Oh My’. Following the well-received 2023 tracks ‘Surreal’ and ‘Distance’, ‘My Oh My’ brims with sophistication and maturity, but simultaneously a youthful innocence and vulnerability. Unlike darker pop tones in ‘Surreal’, the new track continues to kick at the electronic beats we hear in ‘Distance’. Interestingly, slips of vintage funk flutter through ‘My Oh My’ whilst remaining at bay allowing the bold pop overtones to dominate. It’s like we’re staring at a sonic fishbowl as a tinge of groovy funk sits inside a big old layer of anthemic dance-pop – innovative and intriguing, executed with effortless ease.

Just as the concoction of electronic beats and synths swirl about the tune, its intricacy persists in the complex lyricism. Known for personal narratives drawing on his experiences, Chan shares another slice of himself that will definitely resonate with most. Tackling love and relationships, he gives us infatuation on a plate complete with butterflies, giddiness and stupid grins. Chan explains:

“I’m a bit of a control freak, I always need to be in the driver’s seat… So, this idea of letting go and going with the flow; letting destiny decide is scary yet so beautiful… that feeling that comes along with new relationships… When you’ve met someone new and are caught up in the feelings of both lust and love, this is the perfect dance-pop track for you.”
