Jay Wood – Oh Well (2023)

Inspiring, optimistic, positive and engaging, these are not only words to describe singer-songwriter Jay Wood’s music but Jay Wood herself. Triumphant determination sits at the core of Wood’s melodies as she encourages people to overcome challenges whatever they are – just as she did. After going through a horrific car accident resulting in life-threatening head injuries, Wood was left with severe memory loss potentially ending her musical career. Instead of accepting that fate, Wood yelled “oh hell no” using determination to relearn her songs and how to play instruments. This is the message she conveys in her music – never give up.

Known for her moving stage presence, Wood embodies raw vulnerability and steadfast hope in her vivacious performances. While her performances are garnering a strong following, her melodies transcend the physical arena to reach audiences across the globe. Featured on RGM, Broadway World and Amplify The Noise, she is turning heads with her new single ‘Oh Well’.

The debut track from Jay Wood, ‘Oh Well’ is a deeply personal single exposing Wood’s vulnerability but also that triumphant determination and resilience. Penned during a time when same-sex marriage was not yet legal in Australia, the lyricism captures the excitement of a future with her partner, the joy of romance, love and heartfelt hopes. Yet, the lyricism takes a bittersweet turn weaving a poignant lament in her upbeat melody. Wood touches on the loss of love as her partner suddenly walked away – the recurring phrase “oh well” serving as a reminder of her broken heart.

Recorded, mixed, mastered and produced by the team at Norman Solander Studios, ‘Oh Well’ is a toe-tapping tune with a bouncy joviality. Light-hearted guitars match rhythmic drums creating a charming, laidback ambience to ‘Oh Well’. Add Wood’s rich vocals and you have something perfect for those coming-of-age films like Juno. Sophisticated and elegant, there is a mellifluous flow to ‘Oh Well’ but at the same time a raw innocence slivers through with a wistful fragility.

Sincere, sentimental, heart-breaking at times but continuously optimistic, ‘Oh Well’ shows the power of the human spirit with a “well, you’re not going to break me” attitude.
