Jay Roecker – Chances Are (2024)

Delving into the complexities of life with a unique brand of nostalgic but contemporary electronic pop, Jay Roecker has a reputation as a symphonic synth-wave superstar. With over a decade in the music industry, his knowledge, skills and experience inspire more intriguing singles in his discography and, oddly enough, each release retains an obscure eclecticism. In other words, everything Roecker does is fresh, so you feel as if you’re discovering his music for the first time each time you hear another song. We came across Roecker a few years back with his 2022 single ‘Pour On Me’, but today we take a gander at his most recent release, ‘Chances Are’.

Typically revolving around the synth-driven, electropop music world, Roecker’s music is perfect for any rave or dance festival; however, ‘Chances Are’ takes a side-step from pop. Tackling Johnny Mathis’ classic song, Roecker showcases another facet of his musical identity with a charming jazz sound. Retaining the vintage allure of retro music, Roecker keeps his brand of nostalgia with a contemporary twist; however, ‘Chances Are’ leans further toward the old-school blend.

Reminiscent of 40s jazz, Roecker takes us to a different dancefloor with ‘Chances Are’. In a chaotic world of “go, go, go”, a lull to simplistic times oozes from the soul-stirring melody. Calm, quiet and smooth, just listening to this track makes everything lighter and sweeter with laidback vibes. Perfect for that waltz with someone special, Roecker’s rich vocals ooze romance and you can’t help but cock your head and sigh.

A strong similarity exists to the Mathis’ original with its elegance and sophistication; however, there is something that makes Roecker’s version different. I’m unsure what it is. Perhaps raw emotion fluttering in the rich vocals? Whatever it is, Jay Roecker captures the class of Mathis’ version, but with a sleek sensitivity in the dulcet tones. Based on this cover, I’d love to hear more jazz and soul from this versatile musician.

In addition to the single, Jay Roecker released an official music video for ‘Chances Are’. You can view the video below or on his YouTube channel.
