Jay Moussa-Mann – Tangled (2024)
With her deep, dark brown eyes and warm grin, singer-songwriter Jay Moussa-Mann can win your heart without saying a thing or batting an eyelid; however, she is more than just a friendly face. With a simple song, Moussa-Mann not only enchants you but highlights her natural talent, deep profoundness and masterful understanding of poetic music in just a few seconds. In her critically acclaimed singles ‘Ghosts’ and ‘Bad Breakup’, the UK-based artist elegantly explores life with raw emotion and intricate arrangements. Today, however, she’s taking us on a journey with the new single ‘Tangled’.
Following the well-received single ‘Ghosts’ which had her reaching international audiences, ‘Tangled’ is another dose of her insatiable pop sound; however, while retaining the commercial pop tone, there is a shiver of indie-pop lingering as I hear a slightly more rock-tinged tone as compared to previous material. ‘Ghosts’ was a charming ballad but ‘Tangled’ picks up the tempo to a bold toe-tapping song perfect for summer road trips.
Recorded and produced with Patrick Jordan, ‘Tangled’ is a melting pot of bold beats, powerful guitars and Moussa-Mann’s rich vocals. When I hit the play button, I was immediately launched into a whirlpool of kaleidoscopic music; however, while a whirlpool is slightly chaotic, there is harmony in the infectious ‘Tangled’ bordering between being lost in madness and intricate clarity. All in all, the music has a bit of a rough edge but remains smooth, calm and sincere.
Inspired by her honeymoon in the seaside town of Akyaka, Turkey, ‘Tangled’ was penned as a means of capturing the beauty, mystique and joy of true romance. It explores the “all-consuming passion of a romantic relationship…”, yet simultaneously acknowledges the fragile question of whether this is true or a dream. While this might be our introduction to Jay Moussa-Mann, the warm vocals make her an old friend with whom you willingly share all your private thoughts instead of a new acquaintance.
