Jasmin Butler – Ready to Ignite (2021)
The Grenfell Tower fire was an unimaginable tragedy, but it is estimated that half a million people still live in buildings with non-compliant cladding. As one of these people, Jasmin Butler is addressing the issue through her single ‘Ready to Ignite’. Using the words of letters sent by a housing association and their contractors, she has combined this with an anthemic chorus packed with sardonic resignation.
With an upbeat sound, the single tackles the dark subject matter in an effective and emotional manner. The second single from her upcoming debut album, it showcases the sophistication of her writing and indie-folk sound. Drawing on her experience in bands and on the London live circuit, she hits you with relevant material that touches close to home for many people.
‘Ready to Ignite’ hits you with some upbeat vibes through the beats and acoustic guitar. There is a very catchy melodic flow to the music that makes you want to get down to the groove. This is seriously at odds with the overall vibes of the music and the messaging of the track. This juxtaposition is wonderful as you sway to the music while wanting to sing along with the chorus. Later in the track, there is a bouncy feeling to the music enhanced by the whistling and higher tones that come in.
While you are filled with the melodic and upbeat vibes of the music, Butler’s vocals draw you into the track. The use of the letters from a housing association in the verses is a wonderful decision and really showcases her musicality. Turning the wording of these letters into rather infectious lyrics is a serious feat. The biggest emotional hit from the song comes on the chorus which is packed with sarcasm that has a wash of resignation to nothing changing. The catchiness of the chorus will have you wanting to sing along.
Jasmin Butler uses an upbeat vibe to bring attention to an important and heavy matter in ‘Ready to Ignite’. The single not only shines a light on the issue but also highlights Butler’s ability. The catchy melody has you bouncing to its rhythm while the vocals really hit you in the chest, particularly on the chorus.
