Janet Noh – Do What You Want (2023)

From her career as an award-winning classical pianist to her days as a Wall Street investment banker, and her days as a principal on Broadway, singer-songwriter Janet Noh has an eclectic background to inspire her in music and life. A natural storyteller with a penchant for vibrant melodies, US-based Noh is currently a resident songwriting artist at the Lincoln Center Theater…but we’re not here to talk about that. We’re here to delve into her critically acclaimed discography with her new single ‘Do What You Want’.

Following her single ‘Fast Lane (sped up)’, a remix version of the 2022 hit ‘Fast Lane’, Noh slips classical piano into an upbeat pop melody in ‘Do What You Want’. Opening with a prelude of piano setting the scene for something classical, it is clear to see (or rather hear) why Noh is an award-winning pianist; then a swoop of hard-hitting pop hits you between the eyes.

Penned and performed by Janet Noh with co-production by Noh, Dave Schoenwetter and Kubla Khan, the arrangement shows sophistication with a raw edge. Carving a niche for herself in the pop-RnB universe, ‘Do What You Want’ has the sweetness of contemporary pop with brash RnB sentimentality and interspersed classical piano keeping up to a contemporary pop tone.

For me, this is not only a fun song but captures the theme of “doing what you want and not submitting to stereotypes”. With a somewhat personal narrative, ‘Do What You Want’ is an insight into Noh’s vulnerable but empowering state. A lingering to her classical origins settles beneath a brash pop chorus and her bold vocals belting out infectiousness lyricism, ‘Do What You Want’ is a tribute to individuality, originality and daring to shatter societal moulds.

Seductive, optimistic, abrupt and sincere, Janet Noh leaves you with a sense of “I can do whatever I want” with her fist-pumping song ‘Do What You Want’.
