Jane N’ The Jungle – WASTELAND (2023)

Like three tequila shots with a vodka chaser, US-based rock band Jane N’ The Jungle hit you between the eyes with their scorching sound. A “take no prisoners” attitude soars from the hard-hitting vocals fusing elements of alternative rock, metal and punk. Endorsed by Gibson Guitars, the female-fronted group has made waves on the international rock scene featured on Alternative Press, Women That Rock, New Noise Magazine, Essentially Pop and many more. Following their well-received track ‘Raw As A Jewel’, Jane N’ The Jungle blast into 2023 with the single ‘WASTELAND’. Come with us as we take a gander at this new offering.

As with their singles ‘METAL GHOST’ and ‘DIRTY DOG’, there is a spine-chilling harshness within ‘WASTELAND’. Yet, just as ‘Raw As A Jewel’ seemed to lift the metal style slightly, ‘WASTELAND’ brings the heavier classic rock/metal tone back to Jane N’ The Jungle. What I find intriguing is how the new song retains the brashness of hard-hitting rock but simultaneously has a softer, soothing pace to the melody. For me, it lies somewhere between Flyleaf, Halestorm and Escape The Fate (a band with whom Jane N’ The Jungle happened to perform).

While Brian Dellis dominates the instrumental side of things with his distorted guitar riffs, pounding drums and obscure vocals grant ‘WASTELAND’ a sprinkling of vintage rock. The arrangement can certainly set you swirling in a sonic pool, but Jordan White’s wailing vocals seem to capture your heart in her biting execution. Haunting and ethereal but with a forceful ferocity, ‘WASTELAND’ finds that line between comfy and harsh.

Just as the melody is intriguing, so is the lyrical content. Stark and vulnerable, Jane N’ The Jungle expose human fragility in this take on toxic relationships. Hopeless and intimate, the single opens with a desperate sense of being lost in that wasteland; however, as the single progresses we hear (and feel) a greater sense of rage clapped within the overall frustration. Doing what it says on the tin, Jane N’ The Jungle walks through a barren emotional and sonic wasteland in ‘WASTELAND’.
