Jamie Shew – Letters From You (2025)
With a penchant for storytelling and a fabulous voice to tell the tale, singer-songwriter Jamie Shew is described as “a swinging thrush that knows how to deliver” (Midwest Record). This might be the first time I hear Shew sing, but she is a seasoned musician reaching international audiences and winning hearts across the globe. Known for her captivating jazz style, her velvety vocals, and soulful interpretations of life at its most intimate, the US-based Shew has carved her niche and stamped her name on the music industry. Join me as I jump headfirst into her latest single, ‘Letters From You’.
Following the critically acclaimed 2024 single, ‘Enough’, ‘Letters From You’ marks a shift from Shew’s signature jazz to a softer, smoother, pop-inspired sound. Simplistic in a sense, ‘Letters From You’ is an acoustic-inspired piano-driven song; however, the infusion of powerful drums and guitar adds a kaleidoscopic flair to the ballad. Place Shew’s luxurious vocals in the mix, with Mario Jose’s backing vocals, the new song is a glistening sonic river that can mesmerise with its silvery sheen.
While ‘Letters From You’ might be considered a lovely song that offers a sense of comfort after an exhausting day, there is more than meets the eye. For me, an oscillation between dark and light flows in the tune. Confident but vulnerable, tragic but triumphant, fragile but bold, haunting but sincere, Jamie Shew delicately explores life in all its grit and glory with ‘Letters From You’.
“Initially, I wanted this song to be about all the quirky, funny things and memories of my grandma that we all reminisced about during a family reunion… As I was writing down all my memories of her… I realised something very important. This woman more than loved her family, but she was extremely lonely… Through the discovery of old letters between her and her mother, I uncover a deep longing for connection, family, and the inevitable sadness that comes with dementia and fading memories. It’s a tribute to her long life, the guilt of unspoken words, and the importance of relationships…” – Jamie Shew on ‘Letters From You’
