Jamie Felton – Drowning In The Sand (2025)
Known for his confident stage presence, energetic performances, moving melodies, and an enthusiastic ability to “…leave you enticed by originals, entertained by twisted covers, or with a sore throat from timeless classics”. Raw, honest and bursting at the seams with passion that has you hollering for more, it’s impossible not to lose your heart at Felton’s gigs. Yet, you do not have to attend a gig to enjoy his enchanting charm, as his studio-recorded releases are as intriguing. The latest addition to this intriguing discography is his single, ‘Drowning In The Sand’.
Following his well-received 2023 single, ‘This Isn’t Your Average Song’, one might suggest that ‘Drowning In The Sand’ is Felton’s re-emergence on the streaming scene; then again, this doesn’t mean he’s been quiet over the past year. Self-recorded, composed and produced, ‘Drowning In The Sand’ showcases another side to Felton’s multi-faceted personae nodding at old-school rock sounds of a subdued Goo Goo Dolls and New Radicals, but a lingering of modern-day indie-pop with a shimmering of Ed Sheeran and Jason Mraz.
One aspect I find intriguing about Jamie Felton is his total genre diversity. In ‘This Isn’t Your Average Song’, a strong hip-hop sound was heard. Take a gander at ‘Drowning At The Sand’, and the melding of bold guitars and dynamic drums brims with rock-driven vibes. Yet, while you might corner the single in a particular style, Felton hits us with solo saxophone, holding your hand and leading you out of that sandpit with shimmering finesse.
Melodically, ‘Drowning In The Sand’ is a rollercoaster of sound bound by Felton’s rich vocals; however, it is the lyricism that highlights Felton’s profound understanding and celebration of life, both the good and bad bits. He explains:
“’Drowning In The Sand’ is an indie song about global warming. The ‘sand’ refers to the frightening hourglass that every single being on Earth finds themselves trapped in… Donald Trump headlines the outro, with bulldozing, sarcastic statements on his views on the matter – God help us.”
