Jakob The Liar – H E A R T B E A T (2023)

The moniker of Danish singer-songwriter Jakob Kupferberg, Jakob The Liar knows more about life than most people I know. He encompasses the extremes of desperate pain and ecstatic joy in his music traversing the journey from one to another. Knowing what it is like to come by joy the hard way, Kupferberg shares that “all the turmoil around us is actually getting us to where we need to go” – something he understands having overcome a life-threatening mental health crisis during his adolescence. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘H E A R T B E A T’.

Featured in Mystic Sons, Find No Enemy, Mesmerized and Broadway World, Jakob The Liar has been described as inspiring, fascinating and confident. Following his critically acclaimed debut EP Crystallised In Moonshine (released in 2021), this singer-songwriter is returning with a profound, contemplative and engaging new song. Recorded with producers Daniel Mells, Oliver McKiernan and Tim Debney, ‘H E A R T B E A T’ captures Kupferberg’s vibrant aesthetic in a smooth, flowing melody.

An acoustic-inspired single, ‘H E A R T B E A T’ brings that simplistic beauty to audiences; however, the incorporation of pounding drums (courtesy of Sebastian Hankins) and a dynamic electric guitar (courtesy of Daniel Mells) add a rock grittiness to the track. The silver of a piano (thanks to Daniel Mells) within the kaleidoscopic arrangement brings a softer, more intimate feeling. This intimacy, however, reaches a greater height with Kupferberg’s rich, warm and vulnerable vocals.

What I find intriguing is how ‘H E A R T B E A T’ has a warm sonic embrace vibe that elegantly aligns with the single’s intricate theme. Taken from his upcoming album, The Great Awakening, ‘H E A R T B E A T’ is a great awakening in itself. Inspired by recent years when many people felt claustrophobic, fragile and in a desperate need to escape, Jakob The Liar’s new single breaks through these trapped feelings with a moment of passion in the backseat of a car (yep, the backseat of a car).

“Set during that recent period where so many of us felt trapped inside our homes and trapped within ourselves, two people catalyse a vital life change in one another in a moment of fleeting passion. The relationship, alas, is doomed to fall away but you’d never know it from the infectious sense of freedom the song conveys…”
