Jake Stopar – Margaritas (2020)

Ok, no matter how hard this pandemic summer was you at least don’t want the good weather to end. You still want something good to hang on to, The coming cold days just might be cold in every sense of the word. This seems exactly what Chicago roots/blues maestro Jake Stopar had in mind when he came up with this little ditty he calls ‘Margaritas’. Stopar is known around his home town primarily as a bluesman that often makes excursions into other genres, usually with ease. No exception here.

For ‘Margaritas’, Stopar has obviously taken inspiration from some cool soul, and there is no place better to do that than some of Chicago’s best – Curtis Mayfield. Seemingly taking inspiration from the great guitar runs Mayfield introduced on ‘Move On Up,’ one of the best soul/R&B tunes around, Stopar quietly breezes through the tune’s vocals.

The tune is so light and fluffy that it does bring fond memories of summer and it doesn’t necessarily have to be the one that just passed by. It is that combination of the guitar runs, Stopar’s vocals, and the unobtrusive arrangement that keeps you pressing the repeat button quite a few times.
