Jaimie Rozanski – Brighton (2021)

With his aptly titled single ‘Brighton’, Jaimie Rozanski pays tribute to his hometown and 5 am conversations. Through the single, he tells the story of two characters having an early morning conversation on the beach and realising how much they love the city they are in. Using raw emotive vocals and bold heartfelt lyrics, he effortlessly brings what he feels for his hometown to life.

The single is also the first release off his upcoming and highly anticipated debut EP. These releases came to life during lockdown, as the result of excessive writing and introspection. These feelings were mixed with the acoustic guitar tones and electronic mixes that characterise his folktronica sound.

The acoustic guitar that opens ‘Brighton’ has a bright, yet laid-back tone to it. The twinkling tones beneath the guitar add an interesting undercurrent to the melody that further eases your spirit. You can feel the relaxation and peace that comes from being on the beach in the early morning sinking into your soul. The melody is a delicate dance of acoustic tones and underlying electronic tones that come together for a beautiful folktronica movement. There is a grounding to the sound that feels like cool sand under your feet. This is complemented by the reaching edges that help you soak up the peace of nature. The melody does pick up slightly as the single progresses with the sun rising over the waves of the ocean.

Rozanski’s vocals enhance the folky vibes of the music while dropping you onto the beach with someone as you watch the sunrise. Through his emotive vocals, you can feel the love he has for his hometown and the sense of peace that it provides. The lyrics highlight special places around the town, before diving into the story of the two characters sharing a conversation in the early morning. The backing vocals bring the moment to life as they add depth and a second character to the soundscape. As you listen to the single, you feel a small smile make its way onto your face as the heartfelt performance wraps around you like a warm embrace.
