Jagas – Devenu Deux (2024)
I may not be French, but France has always appealed to me in their art, culture, style and especially the language. From the Notre Dame Cathedral to actor Gaspard Ulliel, there is something about France that is utterly beautiful. So, it makes absolute sense that I am thrilled to introduce everyone to the French pop band Jagas.
Already reaching our ears last year with ‘Ma Brésilienne’, Jagas quickly wormed their way into our hearts slapping a grin across my face. We might have been late to the party as the quintet built an international following with the self-titled EP in 2014, the critically acclaimed album Ravi-e-s in 2022, and several well-received singles. Described as powerful, emotional and bold, Jagas turn heads far beyond their European borders. Today we join audiences to enjoy the song ‘Devenu Deux’.
The first single of 2024, Jagas saunters into the new year with a tender ballad surrounding the issue of love. Inspired by life, and particularly love in its entirety, each Jagas song delves into the intricate complexities of romance. In ‘Ma Brésilienne’ the group “invited people to simply defend love”, and in ‘Devenu Deux’ they “encourage you to take care of your loved one and not take this love for granted”.
Not merely a love song to be heard, Jagas’ music is to be experienced ensnaring your senses from the first note. ‘Devenu Deux’ shifts from ‘Ma Bresillienne’ Spanish-tinged pop to a softer flood of pop music wrapped in a heart-warming sonic wrapper.
As powerful as previous material might be, ‘Devenu Deux’ highlights the beauty of simplicity with its acoustic execution. Stark in its arrangement, Clarisse Catarino’s piano meets Thomas Humbert’s rich, warm vocals with charming stillness and intricate sentimentality. I have no idea what Humbert is singing as the lyrics are French; however, the melody’s kaleidoscopic, heart-rendering, soul-stirring nature transcends silly things like language.
As a simple breeze, ‘Devenu Deux’ is a wistful flutter of warmth against your cheek. Yet, as whimsical as it seems, a potent confidence and palpable vibrancy flows through the airy tune. Overall, I love it.
