Jacko Hooper – Getting No Place Fast (2023)
With over a decade in the music industry, singer-songwriter Jacko Hooper has had the chance to collaborate, perform and release records with established artists, such as James Blunt, James Bay, Kiefer Sutherland, Bastille, Chet Faker and many more. To be honest, I just listed my favourites there, but he has a vast collaborative repertoire to his name. Already featured on The Other Side Reviews, we find his music reflective, intimate, soulful and provocative. Yet, we are not the only ones turning our heads in adoration as Hooper has been featured in notable publications like Rock Era Magazine, Less Than 1000 Followers, York Calling, Obscure Sound, and Sinusoidal Music. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Getting No Place Fast’.
Provocative and poignant, Jacko Hooper is not afraid to approach issues involving mental health awareness. In fact, much of his work revolves around personal experiences and emotive concepts dealing with the more intimate side of life. If we disregard his acoustic indie-folk cover of the hymn ‘Silent Night’ in 2022, ‘Getting No Place Fast’ is Hooper’s first release since ‘This Was The Earth’ in 2021. As with ‘This Was The Earth’, Hooper has a hint of Tom Odell in his indie-folk meets folk-pop song ‘Getting No Place Fast’.
Wistful, whimsical and dreamy, there is a cinematic vibe to ‘Getting No Place Fast’; however, the obscurity of Hooper’s vocals and arrangement add a sensitivity to the track. Taken from his upcoming debut album Respair, ‘Getting No Place Fast’ is an honest, open and provocative single navigating Hooper’s experience of mental health challenges. Respair is a documentation of Hooper’s story and “the fallout of this experience…to be able to truly move beyond that experience he needed to capture it, to feel it in its entirety and come out the other side” – ‘Getting No Place Fast’ perfectly captures the desperation of being in the midst of a mental health crisis.
