J0VANNA – Aphrodite (2025)
Inspired by life in all its grit and glory, singer-songwriter J0VANNA transcends decades with music flooded by aspects of 21st-century reality. Focusing strongly on issues such as mental health, relationships and societal pressures, J0VANNA first reached our ears with her debut single ‘Brain on Fire’ exploring the challenges of anxiety and OCD. Yet, while her songs capture the struggle of mental health, they are empowering beams of hopeful optimism as is the case with her new single ‘Aphrodite’.
Following the well-received track ‘BOYS AIN’T SH!T’, the new song is J0VANNA’s fifth single and her first step into 2025.The younger sister of Amy Winehouse and Brandy, J0VANNA blurs the lines of neo-soul with vintage RnB in her single ‘Aphrodite’. Mixed by Terrence Rolle and mastered by Grammy Award-winning Frank Socorro, there is a sophistication to ‘Aphrodite’; however, as a polished elegance drives the track, J0VANNA adds a slice of youthful wistfulness and innocence into the track. I find this particularly intriguing as it captures both the raw naivety and endearing maturity of the song’s theme.
Rich, warm vocals linger in the soulful song, yet there is more than a heart-warming melody to ‘Aphrodite’. Exploring the realm of social media and its effects, J0VANNA tackles the positive and negative consequences thereof. In my opinion, as much as social media empowers people to acknowledge mental health issues, it causes as much damage as empowerment, but I digress. Discussing ‘Aphrodite’, J0VANNA explains:
“’Aphrodite’ is more than a song – it’s a reminder that everybody is beautiful and worthy. I know how harmful social media can be. Just remember, everything you see online is often fake, and you should never compare yourself to something that is not only harmful and unrealistic to your body but also damaging to your self-esteem and mental health… it’s an empowering anthem about self-love, body positivity, and embracing confidence in the face of societal standards…”
Sincere, sentimental and soul-stirring, J0VANNA once again wins our hearts with the breath-taking ‘Aphrodite’. I am eager to hear more from her and look ahead with anticipation.
