J.J. Chamberlain – Thoughts (2024)

Pouring his heart into his music, singer-songwriter J.J. Chamberlain elegantly captures raw emotion through moving melodies. While J.J. Chamberlain has performed as part of several bands, five this year alone, his solo project is as engaging and enthusiastic. We came across the UK-based Chamberlain a few months ago reviewing his debut single ‘Eyeballs’, and he has us returning to his Spotify with the sophomore track ‘Thoughts’. Come with us as we jump headfirst into this swirl of music.

Following the well-received ‘Eyeballs’, ‘Thoughts’ retains Chamberlain’s indie-pop flavour but is somewhat more upbeat than the debut track. No, that’s not correct, it’s not necessarily a kick to the tempo more than more emotion oozing from the track. Tapping into old-school indie-rock, I hear sounds of the 90s fluttering from ‘Thoughts’. Drawing together his guitar skills with US-based Takashia Takemura on drums, and mastered by Belgium-based Nico Secretin, the new single presents a simplistic slide of music; however, intricacy lingers in the arrangement highlighting the complexity of music, emotions and thoughts.

As I mentioned, Chamberlain has a knack for capturing raw emotions in his music. ‘Thoughts’ finds the line between light empowerment and dark tragedy bound in a vulnerable ribbon of vocals and instruments. Chamberlain explains:

“’Thoughts’ was written shortly after the tragic death of one of my closest friends and bandmate, Lanfranco Gaglione. Lan was silently struggling with his mental health and wasn’t able to communicate it to anyone. This event left a massive mark on me as a person and many of the people that knew him… I really want the track to be seen as a reflection of how I was feeling, but at the same time a dedication to an inspirational person who was sadly unaware of how much he did for other people just by being himself… ‘Thoughts’ was born out of an earth-shattering tragedy, but raises its head as a very powerful and anthemic indie-pop song… it is very much a mental health anthem…”
