Izzy Skinner – I Used To Know This Guy (2024)

In her critically acclaimed 2022 album Mr. Wizard, Australia-based Izzy Skinner explored styles like classic rock, jazz, country and pop showcasing her versatility. In 2023, her album Myriad once again flexed her musical muscles drawing on elements of soul, indie-folk and traditional Irish folk sounds. It’s true, many artists display versatility in genre-diverse sounds. Izzy Skinner, however, is carving a niche binding the tunes with a signature violin lacing typical styles with classical precision. Join us as we delve into her single ‘I Used To Know This Guy’.

Taken off her well-received album Haunting, ‘I Used To Know This Guy’ is a mishmash of indie-rock, folk, and pop bundled up in a sonic wrapper. A song not merely to be heard but experienced, Skinner tosses you into a dull, slightly grey, and mildly melancholy flood of music. Simplistic with a gentle drum beating in the background and a guitar breaking in with steadiness but also brash abruptness.

The prominent feature instrument-wise is Skinner’s signature violin. Haunting and slightly eerie, she adds complexity to what first appears as a basic tune. Interestingly, while ‘I Used To Know This Guy’ has a bare-bones sparseness, there is a full-bodied weightiness shimmering across the melody. Skinner’s bold vocals add richness to a drab exterior; an emotional kaleidoscopic rush of sound lying beneath the surface.

This is my introduction to Izzy Skinner, so I really don’t know anything about her and her music. Yet, I find solace in ‘I Used To Know This Guy’, like a friend sharing stories as we sit in our favourite pub just chatting. No need for fanciness, just something still, soothing and calm in its beautiful oddness.

In addition to the single, Izzy Skinner released an official music video for ‘I Used To Know This Guy’. You can view the video below or on her YouTube channel.
