Izzy Pingrey – flatline (2023)

While younger artists have always been around, I am constantly amazed at the outstanding talent of today’s youth – enter Izzy Pingrey. Since the age of 13, 17-year-old Pingrey has been writing songs and learning to produce melodies. Now, with only three singles to her name, she is already captivating hearts and ears across the globe. Critical acclaim from blogs like East Portland Blog, York Calling, Find No Enemy, The Music Asylum and Existential Magazine prove she is making a name for herself far beyond her North American borders.

On the heels of her well-received single ‘narcissus’, Izzy Pingrey releases the single ‘flatline’. Shifting from her Taylor Swift pop sound, ‘flatline’ is something entirely different for the young musician. Her vocals retain the smooth pop flair of previous material, but the melody leans further toward pop-punk and pop-rock. Crashing guitars match pounding drums with a powerful surge of rock tossing you immediately into a kaleidoscopic sonic hurricane. Interestingly, while the instrumentation is harmonic, both drums and guitar demand individual attention before coming together as a whole.

Just as the melody is confident in its wash of music, Izzy Pingrey’s vocals enhance the complexity of ‘flatline’. Warm, rich and mellifluous, her voice caresses your skin but simultaneously oozes vulnerability, fragility and a heart-pounding harshness. Tapping into her inner Hayley Williams, Izzy Pingrey expresses intricate emotions in a haunting but endearing way.

Known for her eclectic influences that many refer to as “perplexing”, Pingrey showcases this diversity in her latest single. Moving from commercial pop to various flavours of pop-punk/pop-rock, ‘flatline’ shows that Izzy Pingrey is not to be pigeon-holed. I look forward to much more from this intriguing artist and I recommend you keep an eye (and ear) on her as well.
