Isaac Roosevelt & Timbhai – Home (2024)
A tribute to the power of virtual connections and online collaboration, musicians Isaac Roosevelt & Timbhai may have not met, but they turn heads internationally with music that oozes harmonic intimacy. Like songs created in a comfy bedroom instead of across the internet, the duo might have a cross-continental connection yet mesmerise regardless of their location. While remote collaboration is becoming more commonplace, it still pushes the boundaries of conventional composition; Isaac Roosevelt & Timbhai also push the boundaries of genres taking a step further toward unconventional eclecticism. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Home’.
Taken off their well-received four-track EP, Juicy, ‘Home’ offers a slower, laidback, soul-tinted intensity amidst the blast of RnB and funk songs. As with ‘Let Me Hold You’, ‘Home’ is inspired by the issue of homesickness as an “American living and working in Europe” – a theme that many people can understand whether they have moved abroad or down the road.
Desperate and tragic, homesickness is a painful, heart-breaking, tear-jerking flood of raw emotion; and it is so perfectly captured with ‘Home’. Weaving emotion through the soaring piano, guitar and percussion, each chord is another heartstring being plucked. Reminiscent of 1970s Lionel Richie, the vintage soul and funk tone meet a modern-day RnB vibe transcending generations, connecting through timeless sounds and themes. The hit of country-esque guitar is a peculiar element, but it only enhances the beautiful obscurity of ‘Home’.
While the melody itself can tingle your skin and send shivers down your spine, it is Roosevelt’s rich vocals conveying the essence of ‘Home’. Oscillating from tear-jerking sadness to hopeful optimism, ‘Home’ stares at the grittiness of homesickness; however, it captures the joyful bliss of heading home – a happiness not fully understood until you feel the yearning for your home.
In a dulcet tone with warm instrumentation, Isaac Roosevelt & Timbhai embrace you with a massive hug, hold out their hands and embark on the journey to your home. For someone who feels the emptiness of this difficult topic, hearing such a marvellous song is a breath of refreshing air and smile-inducing sunshine.
