Isaac Neilson – Take It Higher (2024)

From raw innocence to sophisticated maturity, singer-songwriter Isaac Neilson has quickly graduated from bedroom to studio production, performing alone in his house to festivals like YNot, Eat In The Park, Middlewich Live and even the DH Lawrence Festival. Alongside the likes of Jake Bugg, Stereophonics, and The Human League, he is quickly establishing himself as one of the most intriguing artists to hit the British indie-rock music scene. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Take It Higher’.

Pushing the boundaries of indie-rock conventionalism with eclectic flair, Isaac Neilson saunters through various flavours of rock and pop in his high-powered music. Following his well-received singles ‘The Fight Within Us’ and ‘Flying’, his new single does exactly what it says on the tin: upping the ante of Neilson’s sound. Produced with Tayte Nickols, the track is a concoction of crashing drums, scorching guitars, and bold bass bound by Neilson’s vocals. Interestingly, while the symphony of sound is harmonic, each instrument pushes forth demanding attention ultimately resulting in a chaotic swirl of high-voltage music.

This is just my opinion, but the real draw to ‘Take It Higher’ is Neilson’s insatiable vocals. Lying somewhere between rich warmth and rugged gruffness, he simultaneously gives you a warm hug and pushes you away with brash abruptness. While the rollercoaster melody grips you in a tight hold knocking from multi-coloured pillar to post, a hint of soothing comfort is found within.

Inspired by life in its totality, Isaac Neilson captures the rushing insanity of reality in a rambunctious tunnel of sound. It’s like taking a candy bar marked “life”, unwrapping it and being blown back with the glittering swoosh of chocolate oozing out… but you love every second. Like a vodka shot with a tequila chaser, Isaac Neilson is the drunken debauchery on a night out that we know we’ll probably regret tomorrow but have to enjoy its bliss tonight.
