Ingravity – Move It Up (2022)

If Stevie Wonder were to have a kid with Earth, Wind and Fire, and it was raised by Chicago, the chances are it would be Ingravity. Formed in 2014 by singer-songwriter Benedict Goebel, the Berlin-based group began as a small project but as the years passed it went from a four-piece to a seven-piece. Alongside the bold guitars and dynamic drums, a soulful strings and horn section morphed into the charming tones of Ingravity. While the band has been performing, writing and garnering a following since the mid-2010s, it is only now that they have released music online. Come with us as we delve into their debut single ‘Move It Up’.

Danceable from the first chord, there is a strong Earth, Wind and Fire soulfulness in ‘Move It Up’. Groovy vibes exude from the passionate vocals, drums, horns and guitars. Aptly named, ‘Move It Up’ is a song to get you up and moving about. Dragging you back to the soul-pop and funk tunes of the 70s, there is a nostalgic flair about the melody. Yet, while a retro sound leaps forth, Ingravity retains a modern-day rock style making it fresh but also familiar.

“Light your fire. Let it shine all through the night.” – such expressive lyricism that brings a profoundness to the song’s theme of getting up after the proverbial fall. Moreover, the expressiveness of the lyrics within a heart-warming, upbeat and intriguing melody elegantly captures the hopefulness of the ascent after every fall.

To describe Ingravity is nearly impossible, although I have tried my best above. A fan of the old-school funk and soul-rock sounds, I was immediately taken by Ingravity. I found myself bopping about, singing along and losing myself in what is a sonic masterpiece.
