Indigo Sun – Tu n’est pas seul (2024)
25 years ago in the summer of 1999, musicians Kristine Frejmann (vocals), Ida Nielsen (bass) and Tobias Weltzer (drums) joined together and formed the band Indigo Sun. Skip ahead two years to 2001 and their cover of Queen’s song ‘You Don’t Fool Me’ saw Indigo Sun catapulted to the international stage. Remixes, spots on compilations, and the original single itself placed Indigo Sun as an established name quickly touring extensively with acts like Grasskirt and E.T.A. Skip ahead a few decades and Weltzer continues to release music as Indigo Sun, using heavier reggae meets EDM sound with hints of trip-hop. 2024 is set to be a big year for Indigo Sun as they plan to release four albums, three EPs and several singles including the track ‘Tu n’est pas seul’ (the one we’re about to explore). Taken off their most recent album Electric Blue, ‘Tu n’est pas seul’ is a smoky rush of sensual trip-hop. Produced by Tobias Weltzer, the melody combines hints of jazz, soul and electronic pop in a psychedelic sonic wrapper; however, just as the song has sophisticated layers and textures with bold execution, a sense of desperate vulnerability lingers like a silvery spiderweb clinging to the single.
Not necessarily distorted but with an off-kilter arrangement of Ida Nielsen’s bassline and Ena Egelund’s husky voice, ‘Tu n’est pas seul’ is rather obscure. French lyricism, this being Indigo Sun’s first song in French, adds to its mysticism and magical alluring ambience. I’m unsure why, but it just seems to be there with Egelund oozing French charm.
The melody itself is insatiable, but the overall theme of the single adds profoundness to the jazzy attitude. Co-penned with long-time bass player for Prince, Ida Nielsen, ‘Tu n’est Pas seul’ “beautifully captures the universal longing for a loved one yet to be met… the dub reggae groove with a mellow trip-hop vibe creates a uniquely captivating sound”.
