InAir – Pieces (2023)
Bringing together a wide range of influences from the alternative spectrum, UK-based trio InAir have “bridged the gap between weighty metal and soaring alt-rock” in their inimitable sound. While this is my introduction to InAir, the lads have been sharing their music with the masses since the double-sided single ‘Meant To Be’ in 2016 (or according to Spotify at least). Since then they have captured the attention of audiences and critics across the globe with coverage from BBC Introducing, Kerrang!, and Rock Era Magazine. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Pieces’.
Following the well-received track ‘Same Skies’, InAir break into 2023 with the alternative rock song ‘Pieces’. As with ‘Same Skies’, the group retain a bold, heaviness in the melody but there appears to be a greater sense of vulnerability in ‘Pieces’. Pounding drums merge with dynamic guitars and underlying shimmering synths; however, while the instrumentation comes together in a harmonic arrangement, each element draws your attention with prominence. It is as if the drums, guitar and synths are each a different colour woven into a sonic tapestry making it beautiful as a whole but still showcasing the individual musician’s natural talent.
The hard-hitting melody punches you in the gut bowling you over with its sublime sound, but when you add the disarming vocals you reach another level of music. Transcending the average into the exceptional, InAir proves they are anything but pedestrian. Perhaps it is the heavy melodic arrangement or the heart-stopping vocals, but what ‘Pieces’ does is leave you in a kaleidoscopic pool of intimate intensity. InAir explains that “’Pieces’ is about stopping something you love doing to ultimately better yourself…”, so is this an optimistic empowerment or exposition of human fragility and vulnerability? All I know is ‘Pieces’ is unbelievably amazing.
Crawling in through your ear, rattling about your cranium, slithering down your spine and sending chills across your skin, InAir ensnares your senses with its intoxicating brand of alternative rock.
