ill peach – THIS IS NOT AN EXIT (2023)

Combining the unmistakable talents of musicians Pat Morrissey and Jess Corazza, Los Angeles duo ill peach steps forward with their signature blend of indie-punk-pop sound. While the pair continue to write original music as ill peach, their writing experience has found artists like Weezer and Miley Cyrus on the list. The pair’s new album THIS IS NOT AN EXIT is an enjoyable, refreshing alternative indie album with each song having something a little different to it. For me, I definitely hear Radiohead vibes from this album, but some of the music and voice work reminds me a little of Billie Eilish.

The tracks ‘BLOOM’, ‘COLLIDING’, ‘HEAVYWEIGHT’, and ‘BRIGHT LIGHTS’ are my favourites on the album; they have relatable lyrics and I love the instrumentals. I also loved ‘HUSH’, a great song with an awesome video – the mice are fantastic. This music video is the first I’ve enjoyed in a while and it definitely has more of an indie feel to it.

‘BLAH BLAH BLAH’ is a little more gritty with a punk sound to it. I imagine having this song go through my head while listening to customers who always think they are right (aka “Karens”). ‘SOUR LIKE LEMONADE’ is interesting to listen to, the sort of song you would listen to at the end of a good night out.

’17’, ‘CAPILLARY BED’, ‘HEAD FULL OF HOLES’, ‘SIGH’ and ‘THIS IS NOT AN EXIT’ are also great songs with good rhythms. ‘SOFT’ is a fantastic instrumental piece and I loved the instruments in ‘TORNADO WEATHER’. I would definitely love to see them perform this live. I can imagine the energy they would bring to their music and how that energy would fuel their songs.

Overall, I really enjoyed THIS IS NOT AN EXIT; both the instrumental and lyrics. You can hear the influence of Radiohead and Djorn throughout, yet ill peach has created something unique in their music, something I haven’t heard before. It has been a privilege to listen to this album and discover another two artists’ work which I really enjoy.
