Ilan Bell – About You (2023)
Heartfelt, tender, compelling, confident and enchanting – these are only a few words to describe the insatiable sound of singer-songwriter Ilan Bell. With poetic lyricism and sophisticated melodies, Bell has been compared to the likes of Tom Odell, Phoebe Bridges, and Leonard Cohen. This is my introduction to Ilan Bell, but he is by no means a new face on the scene.
Establishing himself as a musical force of nature, Ilan Bell has received critical acclaim from notable publications, worked with award-winning industry professionals, and helped launch the largest songwriting camp in New York City history including performances by Rob Thomas, Walk The Moon and JP Saxe.
Following his well-received single ‘Anna’, Bell releases the song ‘About You’ – the third track off his upcoming debut album American Love. Retaining the personal narrative and intense intimacy of previous songs ‘Anna’ and ‘Through It All’, there is a soothing quality to ‘About You’. Yet, this seems to be a step away from the folk-pop or indie-folk style of earlier singles as Bell veers toward a more electronic stance. A synth-driven track, there is an ethereal vibe to ‘About You’ as the melody seeps into your skin and leaves you intoxicated in a sonic pool.
Coming up as a writer and producer for various artists, Ilan Bell is no stranger to the power of lyricism in music. In fact, the poetic lyricism is the core of his songs with melodies wrapped around them. In an interview with Illustrate Magazine, Bell shared that he has “…always looked up to the singer-songwriters of the 60s and 70s: Bruce Springsteen, Leonard Cohen, and Bob Dylan… I owe them a great deal for showing me just how much a song could contain”
When it comes to ‘About You’, Bell elegantly explores and captures the evocative essence of “love and loss”. Co-written with producer and songwriter Justin Guzwell, ‘About You’ has the sincerity of a lovesick puppy but the sophistication of a wise old man.
