Ignatius Reilly – Acadiana Contradance (2024)

Drawing together their diverse experiences, skills, knowledge and influences, musicians Eric Bullock (guitar), Mark Brut (bass), Ethan Ice (keys) and “Birddog” Jeff Lane (drums and percussion) create harmonic symphonies as Ignatius Reilly. Binding various styles and genres, as well as threading together retro and modern-day vibes, the US-based foursome blurs the lines between funk, country, folk, blues and Southern rock with true flourish. Already an established name on the Denver, Colorado music scene – both as a band and individually – they turn heads not just nationally but on an international scale. Join us as we jump into their single ‘Acadiana Contradance’.

Taken off their genre-diverse album Superstitions Fade, ‘Acadiana Contradance’ breathes life into the New Orleans rock sound of yesteryear. Similar to but also unlike Americana ‘Singing Bowls’ and blues-drenched ‘Due East’, Ignatius Reilly retains the grittiness of rock; however, a smooth slip of blues meets country slithers through the melody like a shining silvery thread woven in a sonic tapestry. I could give you a quick overview of the pounding drums, soaring guitars and dynamic keys… then again, just writing about the sound wouldn’t do Ignatius Reilly credit. A beautiful flood of music to be experienced rather than merely heard.

Tossing you immediately into a whirlpool of sound, you lose yourself in the kaleidoscopic music. Riding the waves and twirling about in a flood of sound, ‘Acadiana Contradance’ is comfortable and soothing BUT with tumultuous joviality placing a massive grin on your face. For me, the instrumentation is fantastic with a particular fondness for Ethan Ice’s keyboard, yet it is the combination of gruff but pleasant vocals that ups the ante. Joined by guest vocalist Brennan Kammerer, the lingering female vocals add a cushion to the gritty male tones.

A tune that one can easily hear played at a rock ‘n’ roll festival, Ethan Ice explains that ‘Acadiana Contradance’ is ”a song that doesn’t take itself too seriously about living life to the fullest and the characters that you meet on the road that show you the light.” This is my introduction to Ignatius Reilly, and I cannot wait for more!
