Idioteque – Weightless Stairway (2025)
With an eclectic ear and experimental nature, UK-based Idioteque blends a plethora of musical styles pushing the traditional to completely unconventional. Shifting between the worlds of alternative rock to electronica and hip-hop, Idioteque is not to be pigeon-holed. Moreover, vintage sounds blend with contemporary vibes offering a thing that is exciting, intriguing, and sometimes overwhelming. The brainchild of Emanuele Savoca, this is my introduction to Idioteque… and what an introduction it is. Join me as I delve into his single ‘Weightless Stairway’.
Taken from his upcoming EP, A Stone’s Throw From Home, scheduled to release on the 28th of February, ‘Weightless Stairway’ shifts from his atmospheric trip-hop sound in ‘What Is Far Behind’ to a stronger indie-rock meets neo-soul tone. An obscure fusion of heavy drums, bold bass, dynamic guitar and shimmering keyboards, ‘Weightless Stairway’ is a kaleidoscopic sonic river glistening with indie-rock charm. Yet, while the track brims with a vintage rock tone, the lustrousness of old-school soul veils the song with shining exuberance.
For me, ‘Weightless Stairway’ is an enigmatic melody breaching different genres; however, it is Sheba Q’s vocals that make it weighty – even if it is titled weightless. The rich, husky vocals insert the fogginess of soulful jazz making it perfect for those smoky jazz clubs but at its core there is a light in the dark atmosphere. Placed as the midway point for A Stone’s Throw From Home, ‘Weightless Stairway’ is a refreshing breath amidst the melancholy celebrating the present, cherishing your dreams, and building self-belief.
So, what are my overall thoughts of Idioteque and the new single? Potentially sentimental with the languidness of laidback sincerity, ‘Weightless Stairway’ can lift your soul with its elegant sophistication. Based on this single alone, I can eagerly state that I cannot wait for Idioteque’s upcoming EP, A Stone’s Throw From Home.
