Iann Brennan – Can We Let It Go? (2024)

Embracing his passion for music at age 12, singer-songwriter Iann Brennan picked up a guitar and began writing original songs before he even hit puberty. A passionate fire flared in his chest (not literally) and grew as Brennan began playing in bands ultimately supporting renowned Irish artist Aslan. In 2015, he opted for a solo career and, unfortunately, stepped away without plans to continue playing music. Fate stepped in when Brennan’s friend asked him to stand in for a support act… and the fire sparked again. Jump ahead some years and Iann Brennan has penned several anthemic melodies reaching far beyond his Irish borders. Join us as we delve into his single ‘Can We Let It Go?’.

Showcasing his versatility as an artist, Brennan’s critically acclaimed album Start As You Mean To Go On dips into genres from folk to alternative rock; ‘Can We Let It Go?’ steps in with an indie-folk sound. Recorded and produced with Ray Traynor, the single is an acoustic blend of vintage folk with a contemporary indie-folk tone clipping throughout the tune.

Known for his intimate singles, ‘Can We Let It Go?’ perfectly captures the theme of reflection and memories in its arrangement. An acoustic guitar lifts audiences with rich, warm but wistful reminiscence; however, it is Brennan’s dulcet tones that truly embrace you like an old friend. Interestingly, just as the song has a lilt of happiness there is a sense of vulnerability lingering beneath. Brennan explains:

“’Can We Let It Go?’ was written in late 2017 and has gone down as a fan favourite when played live… The song is about reminiscing about growing up around my area in Finglas, Dublin, and growing apart from childhood friends…”

Sincere, sentimental and brimming with an “I swear I’m not crying” fondness, ‘Can We Let It Go?’ tackles the joy and tragedy of an inevitable moving on from past to present.
