Ian Dencker – When Stars Collide (2023)

Two years ago, singer-songwriter Ian Dencker reached our ears with a unique brand of pop, swirling synths and guitars about in a kaleidoscopic twirl of sound. Since ‘Calm Before The Storm’, Dencker has continued to share his intriguing music with the masses from the well-received ‘Dolly’s Dream’ in 2022 to 2023’s ‘HOLD ME CLOSE’. With each single, Dencker seems to take another step into your soul gathering you up on a gale of magical sound. Today, I am eager to present the latest addition to his repertoire, ‘When Stars Collide’.

Following ‘WHERE THE CLOUDS TOUCH THE SUN’, Australian Dencker finishes the year off with a blast of sound in ‘When Stars Collide’. Penned after an evening with his nine-year-old son watching the Milky Way, ‘When Stars Collide’ captures a family feeling in its intriguing melody.

Recorded and produced alongside one of Dencker’s friends in Sydney, ‘When Stars Collide’ shifts from a softer indie-pop tone to heavier, harder rock-inspired sounds. Unlike ‘WHERE THE CLOUDS which had a strong psychedelic vibe to the synth-filled soundscape, ‘When Stars Collide’ is a true rock song. Reminiscent of Green Day, the single leans towards 90s rock with bold guitars and powerful drums. Mellifluously flowing beneath Dencker’s rough vocals, the arrangement is smooth and soothing; however, a crescendo lead to a scorching guitar solo offers a slick of hard-hitting pop-rock.

One aspect I enjoy about Ian Dencker’s music is the collision of rawness and sophistication in the arrangement and execution. Maturity oozes from the nostalgic melody but a rough vulnerability lies in his vocals. Dencker explains the “song is about awakenings, new beginnings and new realisations” – this is elegantly portrayed by the crashing tune saying, “I’m here, let’s get this going”.

When speaking about ‘When Stars Collide’, Ian Dencker shared that he “wanted to write a rock song to try and impress my nine-year-old son…” Not sure if he succeeded but I’m pretty sure he probably will. All I know is Dencker certainly impressed us.
