i only exist as frequency – SLIT THROAT (2024)
“Just a metalhead making noise hoping for a few ears to hear it…” – this is the musician i only exist as frequency. How simplistic is that, but it’s often the simpler things that can be deadly. For about five years, the Australia-based artist i only exist as frequency (also known as Ryan) has been creating cut-throat, head-twirling, mind-wobbling music. Oddly enough, despite Spotify only boasting material from 2022’s album self-titled onwards, listening to this metalhead is familiar, almost comfortable like an old friend sharing a brew as you reminisce on days long past. Come with us as we delve into his latest release, ‘SLIT THROAT’.
Following his well-received single ‘I AM THE OCEAN’, i only exist as frequency trims the length of his track from 7 minutes to just over 3 minutes with ‘SLIT THROAT’. It might not be as long, but it is just as dangerous. Well, no dangerous is not the correct word… more treacherous as the track delves into various styles of metal not leaning to any particular one, so while you think you might know what’s happening there is a sudden shift and you’re all at sea once more.
From hard rock to melodic metal and heavy metal, the pounding drums and searing guitars hit you in the gut tossing you from pillar to post with reckless abandon. Interestingly, while the hard-hitting, mind-bending mash of metal keeps you entranced, the subdued vocals hold the most weight. Hidden behind a rush of metal insanity, there is a softness to the whispers despite the typical screamo execution. A sliver of light in the moody mire granting an inch of hope, help and sincerity while you thrash about.
Produced and recorded by the metalhead multi-instrumentalist, and all at his home, ‘SLIT THROAT’ is a song reflecting on self-worth, self-love and the sinister issue of self-harm. Filled with a sense of fear, despair, sorrow, vulnerability and inner turmoil, ‘SLIT THROAT’ is dangerous; however, and I’m unsure if this was planned, there is a glimmer of understanding and solace as i only exist in frequency shares that people are not alone in their pain. At least one more person knows, so don’t feel too alone.
