I Am The Unicorn Head – Let’s Build A Wormhole (2022)

The product of remote recording formed during the Covid-19 pandemic, I Am The Unicorn Head is a UK/USA-based indie-rock duo. In an interview with the band, I Am The Unicorn Head shared that their motto is “expect the unexpected”, and they certainly push this idea through their eclectic music. A blend of post-punk, prog-rock, psychedelic rock, indie-rock, and much more slithers into your ears and keeps you intrigued from beginning to end. Come with us as we look at their new single ‘Let’s Build A Wormhole’.

Wormholes – they never really made sense to me. Several years ago, I won’t tell you how many, I spent my 25th birthday chatting to a physicist at St. Pancras Station while waiting for a train that was delayed for seven hours. This physicist began telling me about his thesis and explaining wormholes. I don’t remember much, but I do remember something about Einstein and matching two points in separate galaxies. For me, I Am The Unicorn Head seem to explain the concept of wormholes more succinctly in their new track; or perhaps it’s that I find their sonic explanation more attention-grabbing.

Taken off their new EP Unicorns In Space (Let’s Build A Wormhole), the title track continues the band’s concept album about “the intrepid adventures of two Unicorns in Space” and looks at the journey of Unicorn astronauts called The Kid and Space Unicorn. Sadly, The Kid is on another spacecraft in a distant galaxy far beyond Space Unicorn. This is where the wormhole comes in – the unicorns send high-frequency signals to each other using their horns as transmitters thus, creating the wormhole for The Kid to travel through and join Space Unicorn. See, I told you it was easier than speaking to a physicist.

From a melodic perspective, ‘Let’s Build A Wormhole’ captures the psychedelic ambience of travelling through a wormhole. A strong indie-rock influence is evident, but tinges of psychedelia and post-punk are sprinkled into the three-minute single. Dynamic guitars are expertly blended with bold vocals. Interestingly enough, while a gruffness exists in the track, it is simultaneously smooth and gentle. Sending me floating through a wormhole to another galaxy, I Am The Unicorn Head transcend this dimension with its unparalleled music.
