I Am The Unicorn Head – Eating Cornbread In Quarantine (2021)
A highly eclectic band, not only in style but in formation, I Am The Unicorn Head (IATUH) is an international duo with a unique pop-rock meets indie-rock style. The result of the Covid-19 pandemic, IATUH began as emails sent to and fro between people who met on Reddit. Now, the online collaboration is so much more than demos and has a professional quality to the song recording. Brand new and shiny, the UK/US duo can be considered newbies but they have blogs praising them on an international level. Critical acclaim comes from Less Than 1000 Followers, Sinusoidal Music, Roadie Music, RGM, Indie Pong and PROG to name a few. We introduce you to I Am The Unicorn Head with their debut single ‘Eating Cornbread In Quarantine’.
The first of several upcoming releases, ‘Eating Cornbread In Quarantine’ is a psychedelic feast with strong tinges of pop-rock, grunge and indie-rock woven into the sonic tapestry. Compared to Modest Mouse, Mercury Rev and the Flaming Lips, the lads from I Am The Unicorn Head have a great melodic arrangement, but what about the overall effect. Using keys, drums and distorted guitars, ‘Eating Cornbread In Quarantine’ creates a bit of a whirlpool of sound within a hazy kaleidoscopic soundscape. In other words, listening to this track is like being on an acid trip without the acid.
In a rather blunt and brash way, the lyricism touches on provocative issues associated with life during a pandemic. It touches on feelings of angst, loneliness, frustration and “being fed up” because of the restrictions to our lives. While there is an upbeat tone to the obscure track, the lyricism is brusque without any confusion on what it’s all about. I appreciate this brutal honesty and find it highly relatable to individuals who might be feeling the same way. Passion and emotion break through in the debut single and I feel I Am The Unicorn Head is a hidden gem on its way to success.
