Hyooman – Kid (2021)

Initially the brainchild of singer-songwriter and guitarist Leng Moua, Hyooman has an originality that is difficult to describe. Hailing from the USA, the Minneapolis-based fivesome fuse genres from different eras into a contemporary sound. Featured on blogs like Rising Artists Music Blog, York Calling, Less Than 1000 Followers, and various playlists, Hyooman is turning heads across the globe. Following their track ‘Half Brain’, we are proud to review the new single ‘Kid’.

Formed in late-2020, Hyooman has only two singles to their name – ‘Half Brain’ (read our review here) and ‘Kid’, both released in 2021. With warmth and charm, the lads and ladies introduce themselves to us capturing our hearts with their tenderness. ‘Kid’ has a reminiscence to 90s/00s groups like All American Rejects, but with a subtleness that removes any “in your face” attitudes. The melodic arrangement of the guitars, drums and keys seems to boast a simplicity while still having a hard-hitting edge, even if it is a softer song. Yet, it is not only the sophisticated melody that grabs my attention but the lyricism as well.

Using the dulcet tones of lead and backing vocals, Hyooman soothes your ears and soul with the mellow ‘Kid’. Mellow is right as the song captures a nostalgic reflection and sentimental attitude. Hyooman shares that ‘Kid’ “…serves as a catharsis for dealing with nostalgia. While nostalgia is a yearning for the past, it can also be an indication of something that’s missing in the present. Writing this song was a way of trying to purge oneself from dwelling in nostalgia.”

As I mentioned before, the lack of bold, loud and abrasive vocals or pounding instruments removes the “in your face” style; however, this doesn’t mean Hyooman is lack-lustre. With their languidness, ease and flow, Hyooman intoxicates and enchants you in a skilfully subtle way. It’s like those shows where you cannot take your eyes off the supporting actor instead of paying attention to the lead protagonist. Well, at least that’s my experience. Polished, trailblazing and intriguing, this group is now locked in my heart and has prime position on my personal playlist.
