Hyde Away – Deceiver (2022)

A lot of people create a façade that they show to the rest of the world while hiding who they truly are. This is something that the members of Hyde Away have some experience dealing with which they have turned into their hard-hitting and rather ambitious single ‘Deceiver’. Telling the tale of a girl who is not who she seems to be, the lyrics tap into being the only person who can see this, while letting us all know that it is okay to be yourself.

Packed with attitude, crunchy drums and addictive guitars, the single uses a catchy chorus to drive the overall message of the track home. Following on from their last well-received single, this track really lets us know that this is a band who are not playing around. Since starting, the band have been gaining a serious following and have recently played the Junction in Cambridge as well as getting support from BBC Introducing.

‘Deceiver’ rises from the depths with a vibrating tone that sinks its talons into your chest in order to pull you into the pulse of the guitars. The initial rise of the melody is rather addictive and takes an unexpected turn when it drops for the vocals to hit you. Through the verse, the guitars pipe up beneath the vocals like someone agreeing with the lyrics before leading you into the true earworm of a chorus. The guitars take a beautiful melodic turn while the drums crunch beneath them giving them the lift they need to really fly. It is an interesting melody that emphasises the vocals perfectly while bringing this decadent hit of attitude to the track. There is no way that you can sit still while you listen to this track, particularly on the chorus.

When the melody initially drops for the vocals, they enter with a no-nonsense statement that gets right to the point of the track. There is a lot of emotion woven into the vocals through the opening verse as they seem to tap into a breakup. This turns as you head into the chorus when you realise that the person has been deceiving you and not letting you see who they really are. While this is the story of the track on the surface, a quick deeper look at the lyrics lets you see the bigger picture. This is the fact that you can be who you really are and that you don’t have to be the person you think other people want to see. The chorus is undeniably catchy and will have you shouting out with the layered harmonies of the band.

Hyde Away blast you through the soundscape of ‘Deceiver’ with pulsing guitars, crunchy vocals and lyrics that have a lot more to say than first meets the ear. Using a melody that emphasises the vocals, the band hooks you to their sound. Once you are firmly in their grasp, the vocals fly into your senses for an outstanding earworm of a track.
