Hybrid Kid – Change Your Mind (2022)

Hybrid Kid is back on our radar with their single ‘Change Your Mind’. Continuing the punchy rock sensibilities that filled ‘Dabble’ and ‘Coming Round Again’, this single offers an edgy and catchy flow that flickers and flutters through the soundscape. While their previous releases have been packed with indie rock energy, there is a mellowness to this track that brings something new to their sound.

Including a touch of acoustic tones and lush instrumentation, the band is taking their energetic sound to a new level. The dynamism of their music is taken to another level with this track as it offers glimmers of something much deeper. Listening to this track, you can easily understand why the band has been building a serious worldwide following.

The picked tones of the acoustic guitar draw you into ‘Change Your Mind’. The guitar tones feel like they are reaching out into the ether as they pluck against your ears. There is a depth to the music that is resting just below the surface, waiting for you to sink into it. That initial guitar line continues to lead you through the single while the rest of the instrumentation builds below it. In the background, tugging lightly at your senses is an electronic tone that brings a slightly haunting tone to the music. There are a lot of layers to the music as it draws you close yet lightly howls with the chilly edge of a wind. A richer tone enters later, adding a more grounded feeling to the track and changing things up, while still building on the layered instrumentation. It is an unbelievably rich melody that keeps you hooked to the track.

As the guitar draws you in, the vocals rise from between the tones. There is a softness to the performance that seems to reach into your chest and tug at your emotions. The vocals are really lush as they call out to your soul, adding a mellow vibe to the music. There is a touch of melancholy to the music that is tempered slightly by the overall emotions of the lyrics. While undeniably mellow, there is also stark bareness to the vocals that is enhanced by the humming howl of the backing vocals.

Hybrid Kid balances acoustic tones with mellow yet haunting vocals that reach into your soul and tug at your emotions in ‘Change Your Mind’. The music is a change from the punchy tones of their previous releases, with a softer and lusher sound. The vocals pick up this softness as they rise from beneath the melodics.
