Hush Victoria – Hush Victoria (2022)

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes in all its glory, US-based trio Hush Victoria emerged from the ashes of Twin Cities punk rock acts The Devil Blues Band, The No-No’s, and No Pride. Combining their natural musical talent, Brandon (vocals and guitar), Country Matt (drums) and City Matt (bass) are quickly building a following with their hard rock meets alternative rock and punk sound. Described as “uniquely different” (The Punk Head) and “…combining the aggression of Rancid with the lyrical intricacies of Paul Westerberg” (SetListMX), Hush Victoria is set to intoxicate audiences across the globe.

Hitting the sonic waves with their self-titled three-track EP, Hush Victoria is a blast of punk nestled in the throws of hard rock melodies. A leaning toward the sounds of the 90s brings a nostalgic flair to the EP; however, the lads retain a bold contemporary edginess dragging old-school to modern-day. With a reputation for energetic and enthusiastic performances, there is a raw power to Hush Victoria and it translates directly into the studio recordings.

Opening with ‘Under The Rug’, the lads introduce you to their brash style with a hard-hitting slap in the face, but it is ‘Acetylene’ that really pumps up the volume with its distortion and screaming vocals. Finally, ‘Forever A.M.’ ends Hush Victoria with not necessarily a softer, more soothing tone…as much as punk can be soothing.

The distortion, boldness and way all instrumentation bang out individually before coming together in a harmonic whole make this EP unique. Interestingly enough, it is not the melodies that capture my attention or show Hush Victoria’s depth – it is the poetic lyricism. In an interview with Lost In The Manor, City Matt explained that “the songs on this EP are pretty varied. For example, ‘Forever A.M.’ is about a friend of Brandon’s wife who passed away tragically in a car crash. ‘Under The Rug’ is about a friend of Brandon’s who took his own life. We tend to stay honest with our music, even if the subject is painful.”

A slap in the face, punch in the gut and bash about the head, Hush Victoria oozes passion in their intimate, vulnerable, but explosive debut EP.
